Remember, what you write speaks for you when you are not in the room to speak for yourself. You want to make sure that you do not destroy a brand you’ve taken years to create by crafting a poorly written, misspelled document.
Presentation Skills
If you ask almost anyone to create a list of their fears or the things they dread the most, speaking in public will almost always make the top three. It’s as if from childhood we are tormented by the idea of standing in front of a group of people and speaking. It is easy to understand why this fear exists. No one wants to run the risk of being embarrassed or looking inept in front of a room full of strangers. Furthermore, unless you grew up speaking in public at school (thank you again, Ms. Caputo, for making me do this in grade school) or in your local church, few of us have had the opportunity to develop this skill. From a career perspective, it is possible to be successful and enjoy a prosperous career without ever developing this skill. However, if you desire to move into senior leadership positions, it is a skill that you, particularly as a minority, must develop.
The number-one reason you should develop and hone your presentation skills is that speaking in public allows you to demonstrate to senior leadership and others who you are and how well you understand the subject matter on which you are speaking. An additional benefit is that because most people avoid the opportunity to speak in front of a group, doing so says a great deal about your level of confidence, a trait many senior leaders look for.
